Here’s what pressure to land a good job could do to a youngster. Twenty-seven-year-old Shamim Ahmed, a topper in his class, slipped into depression as his family was pressuring him to find a job. Shamim shut himself up in his room early on Thursday morning and kept firing intermittently from his father’s gun for 40 hours, keeping his family and police on tenterhooks.

For those tense hours, nothing worked. Persuasion from family and friends, smoke bombs, teargas shells, water canons, spycams or other tactics. Ultimately anaesthesia was used to make him unconscious.

“The operation took so much time because Shamim’s safety was our top priority,” additional director general of police, Brij Lal, said. We couldn’t have applied tactics used to combat criminals or
terrorists.”

Psychiatrists told police to exercise utmost restraint as Shamim was schizophrenic.

“Shamim was aggressive, but he was also very scared… two or
three times he called out to save him or he would be killed,” Brij Lal said. “He was very insecure and unstable… we could not storm his room as he could shoot himself,” he added.

Shamim locked himself up on the first floor of the house in Bakshi Ka Talab area on the outskirts of Lucknow. His father’s 12-bore double-barrel gun was inside, along with a bandolier having more than 30 bullets. He fired 21 of those.

Lucknow DIG Rajiv Krishna said he fired the first shot around 9am on Friday when family members started banging on his door.
“After that, once the police arrived, he fired whenever he felt threatened,” Krishna said.

Police tried to use his friends and family to convince him to get out, but nothing worked. “He got aggressive with each attempt,” a police officer said.

On Friday afternoon, doctors suggested that mild doses of anaesthesia be released into his room. The drama that started on Thursday, ended around 6pm on Friday evening when police broke down the door to the room and found him unconscious. He was taken to hospital.
