Meghalaya opposition demands more security along Bangladesh border

Opposition NCP in Meghalaya has demanded enhanced security in Muktapur village along the Bangladesh border and adequate relief materials for the villagers dislodged by cross border firing between Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) and Border Security Force (BSF) in the area.

A NCP team, led by leader of the opposition in Meghalaya assembly Conrad Sangma, visited Muktapur yesterday and interacted with the locals.

The visiting delegation, in a statement here today, claimed that the villagers were still under grip of fear psychosis and more families could leave the village.

"As a result of the random firings, most of the children and women have fled the village and are taking shelter in nearby areas. More than 251 families are there and most of the families are planning to leave the village if situation does not improve," it said.

The NCP also alleged that the relief material being provided by the district administration was insufficient.

It also urged the state government to take up the issue of "adverse possession" along international border with the Centre.
 
The BDR resorted to unprovoked firing in the area thrice last month, triggering panic among the villagers.
