The state will soon have the country's first education and training centre for emergency medicine and critical care equipment. This was discussed at the first international Ultrasound and Simulation Workshop for Emergency Medicine and Critical Care on Monday.

The centre which is part of Civil Hospital's new infra-project, promises to train medical practitioners, undergraduates and post graduates. Detailing the project, director Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Dr Sharad Vyas said, "Everyone needs training for using the new equipment and hence our institute will be open to all. There will be programs for EMTs, specialists and/or surgeons in medical fraternity, professors and students who will seek admission for graduate and post graduate programs. We hope the centre will be ready by next year."

The workshop which has been organised by EMS will be conducted over three days and is aimed at providing hands-on practical training to doctors, professors, nurses and even ward boys so as to ensure that emergencies are addressed immediately.

"It is important to save as many lives as possible. The simulation and ultrasound equipment will act as the visual stethoscope for doctors and other medicos, while dealing with emergencies. Through this, they will know about internal injuries in case of accidents and other emergencies, which will help them handle patients effectively and immediately," said director of Sonosite, Pavan Behl.

BJ Medical College offers PG course in Emergency Medicine (EM), which is in collaboration with University of Southern California. A similar program has also been started in Vadodara and is in the pipeline for Rajkot and Jamnagar.

As per Dr William Mallon, associate professor at Keck School of Medicine, USC and director, division of International EM, USC Medical Centre, "We currently have limited seats for the workshop and hence are able to train only 100 paramedics and 50 medicos. Post this workshop the participants will be able to train others. This workshop will be held again next year for further advances learning of new machineries or technologies."

The approximate cost of the equipment that has been manufactured Sonosite India Pvt Ltd ranges from Rs15-25 lakh depending on the configuration.
