A team of Medical Council of India (MCI) representatives began a two-day inspection of the proposed medical college at the civil hospital in Sola on Monday.

The team consisted of Dr. MCR Vyas, whole-time inspector of MCI, Dr. MP Prachand, professor and head of anatomy, Government Medical College, Nagpur, and Dr. Rajyashri Sharma, professor of obstetrics and gynaecology, JN Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University.

The team collected primary information on the first day
of the inspection. The members visited various departments in the civil hospital campus. Later Dr. Vyas said, "This is the first day and we have completed 50 % of inspection work. It is too premature to talk about anything."

There are speculations about basic infrastructure facilities at the hospital that is a must for any hospital to get permission for a medical college. However, the college authorities have claimed that they have met all the necessary requirements. Dr. SV Patel, dean of the proposed medical college, said: "We have all the infrastructure facilities required for a medical college."

One of the important qualifying criteria to set up a medical college is that the hospital should have not less than 300 beds with necessary infrastructure that can be developed into a teaching institution in the campus of the proposed medical college.

At the same time, another team is in Vadodara to inspect the facilities for another proposed medical college at the Government Hospital, Gotri.

Sources present at the Gotri hospital said that the authorities there managed to put up enough beds to meet the requirement but as the patient inflow was poor, they brought patients from other hospitals.

"On Sunday night, nearly 75 patients from the paediatrics, orthopaedic, gynaecology, medicine and surgery departments of SSG hospital in Vadodara were brought here," said the source.

The source alleged that the patients were told that they were being shifted as the Gotri hospital was newly inaugurated.
