Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit today said the media should show both sides of the picture as only harping on "sensationalism and negativity" will make a "cynical" nation.

"Media impacts millions of minds and it has the responsibility to show both sides of the picture," she said addressing a function to mark the silver jubilee of New Delhi YMCA Institute for Media Studies and Information Technology.

She felt if media gives focus on positive things and "good work" being done in various spheres, it will have a positive impact on the nation while "believing in negativity" will eventually make the nation "cynical".

"Unfortunately, many a times, stories that cause sensation get precedence over the good work being done by thousands of people and organisations," the chief minister said.

She urged the students of media studies of the YMCA to keep in mind the need to maintain ethical values.

Earlier, the institute's director Samuel Vaid dwelt on its history and achievement since its inception in 1984 by Wilfred Lazarus, a prominent journalist and the president of New Delhi YMCA. Former students and teachers also shared their experience in the institute with the gathering.
