Medical Council of India (MCI) president Ketan Desai, arrested on graft charge, has been suspended from the post of Head of department of Urology at a government-run medical college in Ahmedabad, a senior official said today.

Desai has been suspended from B J Medical college as he being a government servant has been arrested by the CBI on charge of corruption, principal secretary health Rajesh Kishore told PTI.

"Once the CBI provides us its report, we will be able to decide as to what action could be taken against Desai as per rules," he said.

When asked if the government has accepted Desai's resignation, Kishore said it was not accepted.

Desai had sent his resignation by post a couple of days ago to the Dean of B J Medical College, which he had forwarded to the state government.

Desai had initially worked as a professor at B J Medical college and was later elevated as head of the department of Urology at the medical college.

The CBI had on April 22 arrested Desai and three others in connection with a Rs2 crore bribe for permitting a medical college in Punjab to admit students despite lack of infrastructure. Desai is currently in judicial custody.

Desai and the other accused were booked by CBI under various provisions of Prevention of Corruption of Act, criminal misconduct and payment of money.

Subsequent searches at various premises of Desai is alleged to have revealed huge amounts of cash, investments and gold running into crores of rupees.
