Terming as "most unfortunate" the pandemonium during the Governor's address in Uttar Pradesh Legislature today, chief minister Mayawati said it has undermined the dignity of the Constitution and democracy.

"Raising baseless charges by resorting to an undemocratic behaviour in the House, members of Samajwadi Party, BJP and Congress among others have harmed the dignity of the Constitution and democracy," Mayawati said in a statement.

"The opposition purposely tried to deprive the common people from knowing about government's achievements and works which were listed in the governor BL Joshi's address," she said.

Mayawati said as time has already been allotted for deliberating on governor's address, the opposition should have shown maturity and decency and given their constructive suggestions then.

Referring to the protests over price rise, she said it would have been better if they had taken the Central government to task for it, but they lacked courage in doing so.

"It is clear that the faulty economic and export-import policies are responsible for the problem of inflation being faced by the entire country," the chief minister said.

Earlier, when the Budget session began, opposition parties disrupted Joshi's address by raising slogans against the government and alleging malpractices during the recent legislative council polls.

Mayawati alleged that those who protected criminal elements during the previous government were not being able to tolerate her moves to establish law and order and were raising baseless charges.

In the absence of real issues against the government, the opposition was resorting to "political drama and gimmicks", she said, adding the results of the by-elections to the state assembly and recent biennial elections to the Legislative Council are indicative of the government's popularity.

Mayawati asked the opposition parties to desist from making the Vidhan Sabha a political battleground.
