Under fire from Congress for alleged misuse of central funds by her government, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati today asked officials to properly propagate about the work done under MNREGS to "effectively check vested interests from defaming her government" on this ground.

"The divisional commissioners and district magistrates should properly propagate the good work performed under MNREGS among the people in order to check those trying to defame the government on this ground", Mayawati said at a meeting here.

"Some people have been trying to tarnish the image of the government over the work performed in Bundelkhand region and the officials there should take the help of the media to present the right situation before the people", she said in an apparent reaction to her government's criticism by Rahul Gandhi and other Congress leaders on this score.

Warning the officials against any laxity in implementation of the scheme, Mayawati said responsibility would be fixed on concerned officials in case of any complaint and strict action would be taken against them.

Directing the officials to complete the work and utilise the funds allocated last year by June 15, she ordered on-the- spot redressal of complaints regarding job cards and warned of stern action against gram pradhans found to be keeping job cards with them.

The chief minister said work carried out under MNREGS should be seen on the ground.

In view of the summer, Mayawati directed the officials to carry out work on a war footing in water-scarce districts to make potable water available.

New hand pumps should be bored and water lines repaired in Bundelkhand region including Banda, Chitrakoot and Sonebhadra, by May 15 and divisional commissioners should keep an eye on this work, she said adding power supply should also be ensured in these areas to maintain water supply.

The chief minister issued directives on completing remaining work in Ambedkar villages by May 31.

Mayawati said consolidation work pending for the last 25 years should be completed by August and houses constructed under the Kanshiram urban housing alloted and power supply ensured as per the roaster system both in urban and rural areas.
