Manmohan Singh, in his second tenure as prime minister, today said that "my own years as a teacher have been the most satisfying and fulfilling in my life".

Addressing National Award winning teachers on the eve of Teacher's Day at his residence, Singh said teaching has always been considered a "noble profession".

Singh recounted his years as a teacher.

He also recalled his own childhood experience of studying in extremely difficult and adverse circumstances.

In an earlier speech, Singh had said that he was born on a family of modest means and had to walk a long distance to go to school. "I read under the dim light of a kerosene lamp. I am what I am today because of education," he had said.
