In another incident of smuggling, a Bhavnagar resident was caught with gold biscuits by the customs officials at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Friday. According to details available, Haresh Mangliwala, a resident of Bhavnagar, and his son was caught by the customs officials on Friday.

Mangliwala was carrying seven gold biscuits hidden inside his bag. The gold biscuits are said to be worth Rs1.7 lakh. Sources said that Mangliwala arrived at the airport on Friday from Dubai by an early morning Emirates flight.

During the customs checking the scanning machine detected some suspicious elements. Sources said that when the officers checked Mangliwala's bag seven gold biscuits were found from it.

Sources said that the case was closed after the man agreed to pay the penalty. Sources said that the value of the gold did not exceed the limit set for the amount of valuables a passenger can bring from abroad. But passengers have to declare the worth of valuables they are carrying.

This is the third such incident of passengers trying to deliberately smuggle in various things at the airport.  On August 28 this year a Rajkot-based businessman was caught with 6 kgs of Iridium, a rare chemical powder, worth nearly Rs30 lakh. A couple of weeks ago four doctors were caught with expired medical devices.
