A man was stabbed to death by six people in Yerawada on Sunday. The police identified the deceased as Rajendra Chavan (29), a resident of Netajinagar in Yerawada. A case of murder was lodged at Yerawada police station by his cousin, Anil Rewane (30) against the suspect, Praful Dipal Sonawane (20), a resident of Jijamatanagar in Yerawada and five others. No arrests have been made as yet.

According to the police, the deceased ran a cable business. Chavan was a good friend of Vijay Agarwal, a scrap dealer. Sonawane, who has five cases registered against him at Yerawada police station, suspected Agarwal of being a police informer. Chavan was strolling near his residence early on Sunday when the suspect and five others assaulted him with sharp weapons. When Chavan cried for help, his mother rushed to the spot.

She informed Rewane, who rushed Chavan to Sassoon Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. The deceased had 15 injuries on his body and five on his head. A team has been set up to search for the suspects.

The Wanavdi police arrested a youth for allegedly raping a 20-year-old woman repeatedly and threatening to kill her if she approached the police. The suspect has been identified as Dhumlya alias Siddharth Manoj Sirswal (21) of Kondhwa. The suspect was arrested by the Miraj police on Friday.
Senior inspector, Shivajirao Kanase, in-charge of Wanavdi police station, told DNA, “The suspect was known to the victim’s brother’s friend. Her brother had gone to Gujarat for a job and her parents are labourers at an army-based hospital in the city. Shirswal barged inside her home on April 25 and 27, knowing she was alone.

“He threatened her with a sharp-edged weapon and warned he would kill her if she did not comply with his demands. After two such horrifying episodes, the victim broke down before her parents and narrated the incidents.

“Later, she met with an accident and her left leg was operated upon. Thus, her parents could not react to the crime. On May 11, the victim and her parents went to Miraj to stay with their relatives,” said Kanase.

On May 13, the suspect too went to her relatives’ residence in Miraj. He allegedly threatened them that if they lodged a police complaint, he would wipe out all of them. But he was overpowered and handed over to the Miraj police. The case was transferred to Wanavdi as the victim stays in the jurisdiction of this police station.
