Railway minister Mamata Banerjee, along with hundreds of youngsters, today expressed solidarity with the Stephen Court fire victims and lit candles in memory of the deceased.

School and college students wearing black badges gathered near the building and placed white flowers in front of the Park Street mansion.

Banerjee along with them lit candles and prayed for the victims.

"Stephen Court, we as Calcuttans are sorry, we could not save you," read one of the placards placed on the pavement of the ill-fated building, where at least 34 people, mostly young professionals, were killed after fire swept through the top three floors on Tuesday.

"We decided to come out and offer our condolences for the dead. They were killed without any fault of their own," engineering student Soumojit Chatterjee said.

Many of them blamed the authorities for letting the safety and security of the citizens at risk.

"As citizens of the city, we feel that Park Street and the Stephen Court is a part of our lives. We have many memories attached with this place, and whatever happened is still a shock for us," said Priyadarshani, a 24-year-old student of St Xavier's College.
