Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan today expressed grief over the demise of renowned ghazal singer Jagjit Singh and said his physical presence will be sorely missed even though he would continue to live in the hearts of fans through his melodies.

Singh popularised ghazal among the common man and his repertoire included songs in Urdu, Bengali, Gujarati, Sindhi and even Nepali. He was a maestro not only in the ghazal genre but also classical, light and folk music, the CM said in a statement.

Chavan said Singh and his wife Chitra carved a permanent place in the hearts of music lovers with their renditions in a career spanning over five decades.

According to Chavan, 'Tumko Dekha To Yeh Khyal Aaya', 'Woh Kagaj ki kashti..Woh Barish ka paani', 'Honto se Chulo tum, mera geet amar kar do', 'Yeh Tera ghar Yeh Mera Ghar', 'Hoshwalon ko khabar kya zindagi kya cheez hai', 'Tum Itna jo Muskura rahe ho'...were some of Jagjit's all time great renditions.

Maharashtra Governor K Sankaranarayanan also condoled Jagjit Singh's death and called him "India’s most admired ghazal singer."

In a condolence message, Sankaranarayanan said, "Jagjit Singh was easily the most-loved Ghazal singer of India. His compositions were unique and in a class of their own."

"Jagjit Singh was gifted with the rarest kind of voice that made his compositions elegant, beautiful and timeless. His death is particularly shocking as he had few more years of a brilliant singing career still left in him.

In Singh's death, Maharashtra has lost one of its proud jewels," he said. "On behalf of the people of Maharashtra and on my own behalf, I pay my respects to his fond memory and convey my heartfelt condolences to Chitra Singh and members of his family," he said.
