After stoking controversy on introducing "Surya Namaskar" (Sun Salutation) and "Pranayam" (Yoga Exercise) in government-run schools, the Madhya Pradesh government is now contemplating to incorporate a chapter from "Geeta" in the school curriculum.

"Geeta is based on humanity. We are considering including it in the school curriculum in Madhya Pradesh," State chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan told reporters here last night.

"Nobody can ignore the moral teachings of Geeta. Actually, all religions preach goodness and there is no difference in faiths over this issue," he said while chanting a "Geeta" couplet.

However, the chief minister indicated that the state government was not in a hurry to include Geeta in the curriculum of school education saying that the government's course committee for school education was studying the proposal.

Reacting to the government move, Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh said that his party has no objection to the proposal if holy books of all religions were given equal space in it.

Singh, who is the former chief minister of Madhya Pradesh, said that religious texts such as "Quran", "Guru Granth Sahib" and "Bible" should also be given space in the school curriculum if "Geeta" was included in it.

Earlier, when Madhya Pradesh government introduced "Surya Namaskar" and "Pranayam" in government schools, it drew flak from some organisations and political parties and it was made voluntary.

Meanwhile, reacting to opposition charges that the ruling BJP in Madhya Pradesh was trying to 'saffronise' education, Chouhan merely said that his government was not at fault if some people viewed things from one angle.
