The situation in this industrial hub of Punjab remained peaceful but tense as curfew continued in the city today, a day after violent clashes between police and Sikh protestors objecting to a religious congregation by a sect claimed one life and injured 15 others.

The curfew will remain clamped till further orders to maintain peace and order, deputy commissioner Vikas Garg said here today.

Post-mortem of Darshan Singh, who died of bullet wounds during the protests yesterday, was being conducted, officials said. He allegedly fell victim to the bullets of police when they opened fire at Samrala Chowk to stop supporters of various Sikh groups from marching towards the venue of a religious congregation to be addressed by Ashutosh Maharaj of Divya Jyoti Jagran Sansathan.

Meanwhile, certain radical organisations, including Damdami Taksal and Khalsa Action Committee, had given a bandh call for tomorrow to protest the police action.

Hospital sources said that out of the 15 injured, two had gone through major operations at the Christian Medical Hospital, where their condition is stated to be stable.

The Punjab government yesterday ordered a magisterial inquiry into the violence.

Law and order was disrupted here since late Thursday night when some labourers went on a rampage to protest alleged police inaction on a complaint of one of their fellow workers who was allegedly robbed by some persons.
