Their size enabled the two little children to cheat death. Miraculously, the area they slept in came in the gap between the tyres of the truck that ran over the legs, hands, head and stomach of those who were sleeping near the kids.
While destiny guarded the sisters, their uncle - Irshad Khan dragged them from below before the truck reversed and ran them over. He saved the lives of his nieces but is left with a broken hand crushed by the reversing truck's wheel.
Narrating the incident, Nargis, Mevis and Munni's mother, told DNA, that there were around 17 members of her family sleeping with other pilgrims at Bagodara chokdi.
"I saw a speeding truck coming towards us and started shouting and warning people. I saw the truck's tyres running over people and suddenly thought about my daughters. I lost hope of seeing them alive. But to my utter surprise, both were awake and safe," said Nargis with tear-filled eyes.
The joy of finding both her daughters safe with her could be seen on her face as she fed them a cup of ice cream. Recalling the incident Irshad Khan said, "I knew the truck was reversing and I wanted to save my nieces. Without losing a moment I dragged them out. My hand was stuck beneath the tyre," he said. He has no regrets, however, about his fractured hand.
"The doctors said I will have to undergo a surgery but I am happy that I could save two lives," he said. The family, however, lost three members - Muradkhan (45), Beegbai Muradkhan and Mariyamben (60) in the incident.
