In what has again exposed an alleged police-bootlegger nexus, a police team led by joint commissioner of police (JCP), Satish Sharma, on Sunday busted a major liquor den in Shaherkotda.

The police seized around 400 crates of India Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) worth Rs25 lakh and caught one Kamlesh Sharma, said to be a notorious bootlegger of the locality, red-handed.

Acting on a tip-off, Sharma took the help of Shahpur police and raided a house located at Shantidas ni Chali near Ashok Mill in Shaherkotda. The JCP said the local police (Shaherkotda) knew about the existence of the liquor den but were not taking any action to close it down. He further said that the fact that such a huge quantity of illicit liquor was seized points to the possibility of a complicity between the local police and the bootleggers.

Police said the suspected bootlegger, Sharma, had hidden the liquor bottles in around 400 crates in the house. In fact, the entire house was being used only to conceal liquor while the bootlegger himself lives somewhere else, police said.

The police were themselves surprised to see so much liquor
stocked in one house. They said there was nothing but liquor everywhere. It is one of the biggest raids on a liquor den in recent times, police added.

Kamlesh Sharma has been booked several times in the past but every time after release from jail, he returns to his bootlegging business, the police said.  Other sources added that the accused has been in this illegal trade since the last 15 years. Sources even revealed that although he has been so prolific in his activity, no action has been taken against him since 2004; they went on to reveal that Kamlesh is believed to have contacts with local police.
