Opposition parties, the BJP and the Left, on day two of parliament’s winter session while maintaining a measured distance from each another, effectively managed to stall proceedings, seemingly together.

While the Left attempted without success, for the second time, to get Lok Sabha speaker Meira Kumar to admit an adjournment motion on price rise on Wednesday morning, the BJP was happy just watching other parties stall proceedings.

Relentless in its anti-corruption drive, the BJP intends to approach the speaker’s office on Thursday morning, seeking an adjournment motion on the issue of black money.

While knowing well that their request would be shot down, the BJP appeared inclined that its leader LK Advani, back from a nation-wide tour, touting public awareness as the means to fight corruption, should be allowed to make a grand presentation inside the House.

BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman told DNA her party has decided on moving an adjournment motion on the issue of black money on Thursday morning.

“We will go ahead with the adjournment motion on black money and we are following all parliamentary procedures in this regard,” she said adding the “Left parties are expected to support us.”
According to CPI parliamentary party leader, Gurudas Dasgupta, leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, Sushma Swaraj had a telephonic conversation with him and CPI(M) parliamentary party leader Basudeb Acharia on Tuesday to discuss “how the opposition issues of price rise and black money” could be well coordinated between the BJP and the Left.

“On black money, the Left could itself move a separate adjournment motion on Thursday. We are yet to take a final decision in this regard,” Dasgupta said. He somehow did not appear keen on letting the plan out before Thursday morning. When asked whether they support the BJP on black money, “price rise and corruption are very important issues for the Left,” was his reply.

When asked if the CPI(M) and the Left Front would support the BJP’s black money motion, he said, “We will definitely not oppose it.” But, will the Left move an independent adjournment motion?

“We may give such a notice,” Acharia said.
Although the BJP is aware of the Left’s two attempts at getting adjournment motions admitted on price rise and then finally agreeing to the Congress proposal of discussing the matter under Rule 193 (a vote-free norm), they are still determined to make a “statement” by requesting an adjournment motion on black money.

Earlier in the day, BJP leader SS Alhuwalia told reporters in parliament that there was adequate BJP-Left coordination on price rise and black money.

As of now, the only disconnect between the two sides appeared to be on “boycotting” home minister P Chidambaram.

Conventionally, the BJP and the Left parties are ideologically opposed entities but the winter session of parliament has brought them together to fight a common enemy, the Congress.
