The court proceedings were disrupted in Surat on Wednesday as lawyers struck work to press for their demand to transfer district & sessions judge RP Dholaria.

According to officials, more than 3,000 lawyers affiliated with Surat District Bar Association (SDBA) boycotted court proceedings and related work during the day. This was a day after the association decided to strike work for two days alleging humiliation at the hands of Dholaria and other judges.

“The strike was total as all our members have boycotted all court related work. We will boycott court proceedings tomorrow too,” Mahendrasinh Atodaria, president of SDBA, said. A large number of police personnel were deployed in the court premises as a precautionary measure, officials said. Apart from SDBA office bearers, other senior lawyers such as Ashit Mehta, Babu Pathan, VC Trivedi, Dhansukh Zaveri, among others resorted to picketing at the gates of the court building.

Litigants, who had come to the court, had to face several hardships on account of disruption of court proceedings due to lawyers’ strike. Many people seeking bail in petty cases were also stuck because of the strike. SDBA has announced that its members will remain on strike on Thursday too. However, lawyers affiliated with Surat City Advocates Association did not take part in the strike.

“We have neither supported nor opposed SDBA’s strike call. It is on individual members to decide whether they want to work as normal or keep away from it. But, we have asked our members to avoid friction with other lawyers,” said Achal Shah, president of Surat City Advocates Association.

The lawyers are on warpath against sessions judge RP Dholaria for almost a month. This was after bar association office bearers and public prosecutor were not invited to a Lok Adalat on June 27. The association saw this as an insult and passed a resolution.

“Judge Dholaria and his subordinate judges are ignoring lawyers. The lawyers are facing humiliation due to highhanded approach of judges,” senior lawyer Ashit Mehta, said
