Para-military forces of India and Pakistan will jointly start a fresh survey of pillars at the border line demarking the two countries in Kutch area by December end. This was decided at a high-level meeting in Pakistan by the officers of the para-military forces of the two countries in Pakistan.

This was the main agenda of the quarterly meeting of the DIG-level sectors heads of the para-military forces -- the Border Security Force of India and Pakistan Rangers at Khokarapar in Sindh province of Pakistan. Virendra Kumar, DIG, Bhuj, led the Indian delegation of BSF officials and UK Nayal, Gandhinagar-based BSF DIG was present there.

There are 20 to 23 pillars which are either in bad shape or are not at all visible, which could actually demark the border line of the two countries. The pillars have been damaged by water-logging in the area due to the Indus water floods in southern Sindh of Pakistan earlier this year.

Talking to DNA, DIG, Border Security Force, Gujarat Frontier, UK Nayal said that initially a joint verification of both the sides by both the forces will be conducted. The forces will verify how many pillars have been damaged, immersed in water or are completely broken down. The verification is a part of the survey to be continued till March or April.

"Currently the Indus water from our side has lowered and we are in a position to reach the border pillars, but the water level in Pakistan is still high," Nayal said. "It is true that the pillars, particularly around 1175, remain submerged and we do not know their present state. Both the countries at this meeting decided to hold joint survey in December after the water receded to carry out repair work or construct new ones if they have been totally destroyed," Nayal said.

He said as per the existing arrangement, the pillars with even numbers were looked after by India, while those with odds number by Pakistan. Sources in BSF said that the pillars in Kutch sector started from number 1050 and ended with 1175, which is at the end of the Rann.
