Know what your kid is doing online

Instead of encouraging online networking, parents need to ensure that the child gets to make many friends in real life, say psychologists.

The case of a teen caught in cyber crime has sent alarm bells ringing among parents whose children prefer to be online most of the time. And sociologists and psychologists say there is a need for alarm as teenagers who are unable to communicate with their parents are more likely to take to such crimes.

Psychologist, Dr Prashant Bhimani told DNA that the lack of emotional ventilation for kids lands them in such troubles. "The kids need someone to hear them and understand them. If they don't find it at home they may start thinking of the internet as a surrogate friend," said Bhimani.

Bhimani said that parents often think that their responsibility ends with getting the kids a computer or television. "Lack of supervision and over protection can both lead to extreme situations," said Bhimani.  "The kid should be allowed to live his life but at the same time his or her activities too should be monitored. A parent need not spy on his child but should at all times know what the child is up to," said Bhimani.

Sociologist, Gaurang Jani told DNA that nowadays there is no dialogue between the kids and the parents. This means they look to friends, who are often the same age as the kids, as mentors and end up in trouble.  "Parents should ensure that at least one meal of the day is a family affair during which they should make an effort to know about what the child was up to," said Jani.

He also said that instead of encouraging online networking, parents need to ensure that the child gets to make many friends in real life. "Not only friends but the attitude and behaviour of parents too affect the overall behaviour of a child," Jani said.
