Expensive liquor flowing freely, loud music, dancing girls dressed in shorts and a group of affluent youths having a nice time. This is not a scene out of Las Vegas but what was going on at a club house in Sanand late on Thursday night when the police arrived and poured cold water on the revellers’ plans.

Late on Thursday night, the Ahmedabad rural police raided the club house of Shyam Villa Bungalows on Nidhrad-Kalol road in Sanand, where a party was going on. The police arrested 29 people, including  seven girl dancers, a colonel, an assistant sub-inspector and several high-profile youths.

Those arrested were held under the prohibition act, and for obscenity, the police said, adding that the seven girls were brought from Mumbai specifically for the party.  The party was organised by Narendrasinh Vaghela, the son of an ASI at Aslali police station, a police source said.

District superintendent of police, Ahmedabad rural, Sandeep Singh, who had received a tip-off about the party a few days back, said that initially they did not know exactly where the party was to be held.  “We were trying to find the exact place,” Singh told DNA. “Finally, we were able to find it with the help of our officers.”

When the police arrived, most of the youths at the party were drunk. The police seized a lot of beer, high-quality liquor, luxury cars, mobile phones and a music system from the bungalow. “We were shocked by the general atmosphere at the party,” said a source in the Ahmedabad rural police. “The youths were drunk and the dancers were dancing provocatively.”  The raid, conducted by personnel of Sanand police station and the local crime branch (LCB), was led by police inspector (LCB) DJ Chavda and police inspector of Sanand police station, MM Zhala.

The girls, who were brought from Mumbai, said they were told that they would be performing at the birthday party thrown by an NRI youth.   They did not know they would have to dance before a group of drunk youths in a clubhouse, the girls said.

Zhala told DNA that they had found all the youths drunk. “They were also partying and the girls were dancing,” he said. “We also seized more than Rs1.20 lakh in cash from the spot.” Sources said the police had seized cars worth over Rs61 lakh.
