Around 200 farmers of Katesar yesterday gathered on the road hoping that Gandhi's cavalcade would stop and they would get a chance to apprise him of their problems.
The two-day visit of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to Purvanchal areas of Uttar Pradesh left the farmers of Katesar, fighting for cancellation of land acquisition by the Varanasi Development Authority (VDA), disappointed as they failed to get an audience with him.
Around 200 farmers of Katesar, near here, yesterday gathered on the road hoping that Gandhi's cavalcade would stop and they would get a chance to apprise him of their problem which is similar to Bhatta Parsaul.
They expected Gandhi to listen about VDA's plans of developing new Kashi and city cultural hub centre in the trans-Ganga region.
However, the farmers succeeded in slowing down Gandhi's cavalcade and managed to handover a letter of their demands.
Manju Yadav, a farmer of Katesar village, complained that farmers here were not happy with Gandhi. "He marched to Bhatta Parsaul and Tappal for the cause of farmers but couldn't even step out of his car for a few seconds to listen to our problems. We are also farmers of the country and are faced with similar problem," he said.
Gandhi passed through the district while he was on his way to Varanasi to attend a party function.
"It would have been better had he stopped and we could have apprised him that the farmers of the eastern region also faced similar problems of land acquisition," Dinanath, leader of Kisan Sangharsh Samiti, said.
The agitation held in May by Kisan Sangharsh Samiti had forced the District Magistrate and SSP to send a letter to the government recommending cancellation of the notification for land acquisition but a final decision was still awaited.
