The DMK president took a swipe at Tamil Nadu chief minister for holding the portfolio despite an ongoing case against her for disproportionate assets.
DMK President M Karunanidhi Saturday took a swipe at Chief Minister Jayalalithaa for holding the Vigilance portfolio despite a Bangalore court hearing the disproportionate assets case against her, saying she must emulate her Kerala counterpart Ommen Chandy.
Writing in party mouthpiece Murasoli, he pointed out Chandy relinquished the Vigilance portfolio after a court ordered further probe in palmolein import case.
"When a vigilance probe is on against her, it is completely improper for her to hold the portfolio. The Kerala Chief Minister had not only relinquished the vigilance portfolio but also offered to legally face the case. One has to have the courage to say like this," Karunanidhi said.
Chandy shed the Vigilance portfolio last week after a court directed his role be investigated in palmolein import deal when he was the Finance Minister in the K Karunankaran government in 1992.
Responding to Jayalalithaa's recent contention that he had only enacted an "eye-wash drama" on Sri Lankan Tamil issue, Karunanidhi recalled the various steps he took since 1956 when he first proposed a resolution in support of Sri Lankan Tamils in DMK General Council under its founder late CN Annadurai.
Listing them, Karunanidhi said he resigned as MLA along with party General Secretary K Anbazhagan in 1983 in support of the Tamil cause. He recalled he had written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in 2008 urging him to bring about a ceasefire in Sri Lanka during the war againt LTTE.
Jayalalithaa, on the other hand, said casualties were common in a conflict, Karunanidhi said recalling a statement made by her in 2009.
