Setting an example his students should never follow, Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) vice-chancellor KS Rangappa allegedly got an Osmania University research paper published in his name in an international science journal within a year of its appearance in an Indian journal in October 2009.

Osmania chemistry professors G Vijayalakshmi, M Adinarayana and P Jayaprakash Rao prepared a research paper, ‘Kinetics of oxidation of adenosine by tert-butoxyl radicals: Protection and repair by chlorogenic acid’, in 2008 and sent it to Indian Journal of Biochemistry and Biophysics on July 16 the same year. They revised the paper on August 10, 2009, and it was published in October.

Rangappa allegedly published the same paper in the April 2010 edition of Journal of Physical Organic Chemistry (Europe), adding his name and that of MN Kumara and DG Bhadregowda. The vice-chancellor also gave his address for correspondence.

“We have no collaboration with…any of the names — MN Kumara, DG Bhadregowda and KS Rangappa,” the original authors said.
DNA has copies of the paper published by the original authors and Rangappa’s allegedly plagiarised version. The plagiarised copy is also available on www.interscience.wiley.com.

The matter came to light by chance when one of the original authors, Adinarayana, was searching for their paper on the internet. He was shocked to find it on www.interscience.wiley.com. The website had sourced from Journal of Physical Organic Chemistry (Europe).

“We immediately sent a letter to John Wiley and Sons, publishers of the international journal and requested them to remove the paper from the website. They responded positively,” Adinarayana said.

“The journal was electronically published without our permission, and using our names without our knowledge is a criminal offence. We have written letters to UGC chairman, governor of Karnataka, vice-chairman of Karnataka Higher Education Council and registrar of Mysore University, but have not received any reply on action taken against the culprits.”
