Police have tightened the security around governor HR Bhardwaj after an intelligence report alerted that some miscreants may try to blacken his face.

The apprehension came in the wake of the standoff between the ruling BJP and governor that is getting worse by the day ever since it became acute after the governor’s assent to prosecute chief minister BS Yeddyurappa.

Intelligence sources stated that they had clear information that there was a possibility of an attack on the governor. “We do not want any kind of bad remark on the police, who is being accused as siding with the ruling party (BJP). If such a thing happens, not only police, but also the image of the entire state goes for a toss,” a senior intelligence officer said.

This has resulted in police across the state giving more protection to the governor wherever he went, whichever function he attended, the officer added.

A special team of governor’s security has been put on alert since Monday. The local police were seen throwing a security cordon around governor while he was attending programme in the city on Tuesday.

A special team has been formed to watch out for suspicious persons at the governor’s programmes. The team will alert any suspicious movements on governor’s routes.

“The governor’s move to give consent to prosecute Yeddyurappa for his alleged involvement in land scams is the main reason,” intelligence sources said.

“There is an apprehension that somebody among the BJP’s lower ranks may commit such a grave mistake bringing the state to a constitutional crisis. The whole blame will have to be faced by the police. The police also suspect that some other groups may also attempt blackening his face,” they said.

“We are also planning to install mobile CCTVs at the venues of various functions in the state. We are also using 26 metal detectors. Eight deputy commissioners of police will be on duty,” an officer said. There will be 15 assistant commissioners besides 40 police inspectors and as many as 2000 police personnel, a senior officer said.

A detailed security meeting was held between police commissioner Shankar M Bidari and his deputies on Tuesday to oversee and plan the Governor’s security matter.
