A tree-lined, dust-free city road on which vehicles sail unhindered by encroachments or potholes — the AMC is laying the road to this civic fantasy on the Judges Bungalow road, by developing it as Ahmedabad’s ‘model road’.
In fact, the drive to clear encroachments from the Pakwan Restaurant-Keshavbaug Party Plot stretch has already begun.
The model-road plan was spurred by the fact that work on the second phase of the BRTS, to begin shortly on the Satellite road, will push traffic onto the Judges Bungalow road. So the civic body wants to prepare the road to bear the additional traffic burden.
IP Gautam, the municipal commissioner of Ahmedabad, said that the civic body wanted to remove unregulated larris and gullas from the Judges Bungalow road so that traffic could flow without any impediments.
The Gujarat government has instructed the estate management and town planning department, the health department, and engineering department to focus on traffic-friendliness while carrying out the project on the Judges Bungalow road. “Some commercial establishments use the footpath for business activities,” said a source in the estate department who is apprised of the model-road project. “The department has removed merchandise placed on footpaths.” Recently, the department cleared the encroachments made the Choice restaurant, and Rasranjan, an eatery.
As for the future plans, the civic body has decided to install traffic-surveillance cameras on the model road, and to prohibit parking on the stretch.
Moreover, the engineering department has been asked to remove the footpaths in some areas to create greater leeway for traffic.
