A 52-year-old jeweller was found dead with multiple stab wounds at his residence here, police said today.

The incident was reported from Moti Nagar at around 11:45am yesterday and the victim has been identified as Surender Singh, who runs a jewellery shop on the ground floor of his residence.

Singh was alone at his residence, as his wife Meena and son Mukul had left for Shimla on Friday night. Police suspect the murderer was known to the victim.

"He was stabbed on his neck, chest, stomach, hands and legs," a senior police official said.

The incident came to light when a woman Lalita came to the shop and then entered the first floor residence as it was found open.

She saw Singh lying in a pool of blood and raised an alarm.

Singh's nephew rushed to the spot and finding the jeweller with multiple wounds, he informed police who took the victim to Deen Dayal Upadhyay hospital. He was declared brought dead by doctors.

Police suspect personal rivalry to be the reason behind the murder.

"It appears that the killer is known to the victim. The entry into the house was friendly. We are talking to his family to ascertain whether Singh had rivalry with any person either business or personal," the official said.

The body has been sent for post-mortem and the police is awaiting the report.
