Jat strongman Hooda returns at the helm of affairs of Haryana

Bhupinder Singh Hooda, who was chosen to head the Congress Legislature Party in Haryana by party President Sonia Gandhi, has come a long way in his political career.

Despite a poll setback suffered by the Congress whose tally has come down by 27 seats in the Haryana assembly, veteran Jat leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda has got a second consecutive term as chief minister.
 
Hooda, who was chosen to head the Congress Legislature Party in Haryana by party President Sonia Gandhi, has come a long way in his political career from being a block president in his native area of Kiloi in Rohtak district 37 years ago to becoming the Chief Minister of the state for the second time.

The 62-year-old leader was made the president of the Haryana Pradesh Youth Congress from 1982-1983 and remained the chairman of the Panchayat Samiti and Panchayat Parishad from 1983-1987.

Hooda was first elected to the 10th Lok Sabha in 1991 and the following year he was made the member of the All India Congress Committee. In 1994, Hooda was made a Member, Executive Committee of Congress Parliamentary Party (Indira). He was re-elected to 11th Lok Sabha in 1996 and was the president of the Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee in 1997.

In the following year, he made his third entry to Lok Sabha. During 1998-99, he was made member of three committees -- on Agriculture, subordinate legislation and consultative committee, ministry of communications.

Hooda was elected to the Haryana assembly in 2000 from Kiloi constituency and was the leader of opposition in the House from 2002 to 2004. In 2005, Hooda was sworn in as the chief minister of the state for the first time.

Son of veteran parliamentarian Ranbir Singh, Hooda was born on September 15, 1947 in Sanghi village in Rohtak district. Hooda completed his education from Panjab University, Chandigarh and Delhi University. He has a son Deepinder, who is a Congress MP from Rohtak, and a daughter. The Congress leader also has keen interest in cricket, badminton and lawn tennis.
