Five pairs of trains, which were cancelled since March 22, to facilitate additional coal rake movement to power plants in Haryana facing depleting coal stock, was today extended by another two days.
"Since still there are large number of pending indents of food grains and quantity of coal available with power house is precarious, further extension of cancellation of trains was required," said a railway official.
The Jat agitation which has blocked Shakurbasti-Bathinda line of northern railway has led to diversion of traffic to Delhi-Ambala section, choaking the line and causing decreased supply of power house rakes and has hampered foodgrain movement.
The Jat agitation on Delhi-Bathinda section of Northern Railway and on Bikaner and Jaipur division of north western railway has swelled railways losses to over Rs100 crore now, the official said.
Some of the trains cancelled today included New Delhi-Ajmer-New Delhi Shatabdi Express, New Delhi-Ahmedabad-New Delhi Rajdhani Express, Delhi-Sriganganagar-Delhi Intercity express, Delhi-Pathankot-Delhi Dhauladhar Express, Delhi Sarai Rohilla-Sriganganagar AC Express among others.
The official said that as per conservative estimate, railways are losing Rs5 crore per day due to the cancellation and short termination.
Railways have already announced cancellation of 76 trains and diversion of 32 tomorrow due to the agitation.
