The battle of nerves between the Congress leadership and the rebel Kadappa MP YS Jaganmohan Reddy continues even after the appointment of a new chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy in Andhra Pradesh.

Jagan, the son of the late chief minister YSR Reddy is cleverly using Sakshi a television channel owned by him to fire shots at the leadership. Ham strung by the principles of freedom of press, the annoyed Congress leadership is unable to strike back at him. But Congress spokesperson Shakeel Ahmed gave adequate notice of the party’s displeasure.

“The content being shown on the channel is certainly not news, and when views are being aired by a channel, it can be inferred that they have sanction of the management,” he told reporters when asked to comment on Sakshi’s criticism of the party general secretary Rahul Gandhi’s performance in the Bihar elections.

However, other leaders have not been as discreet as Ahmed. Union urban development minister Jaipal Reddy who hails from Andhra has been more vocal while critical. He said that whereas Jagan’s father was a loyal Congressman, the son is more confused.

As the new chief minister spent the day doing the customary rounds of consultations with the party leadership included president Sonia Gandhi discussing various issues including the composition of the new ministry, there was a hint of a split in the Jagan camp with his uncle YS Vivekananda Reddy lobbying for a ministerial berth. Indeed, the contours of the political showdown between Jagan and the leadership would be defined only after the formation of the ministry. But neither side expects that a complete cessation of hostilities will take place in the immediate future.
