J&K govt to pump in Rs100 crore to modernise 40,000 looms

In a bid to give a new look and boost to Jammu and Kashmir's handloom industry, the state government has embarked on a mega plan of modernising 40,000 looms with an investment of Rs100 crore.

"In the handloom sector, the government has embarked on a mega plan of modernising 40,000 looms involving Rs100 crore," minister for industries and commerce, Surjeet Singh Slathia said while wrapping up the discussion on the grant of his ministry in J&K Assembly.

Besides, the government is also focusing on the design and diversification, providing credit facilities,  enhancing weavers productivity by skill upgradation and use of efficient handlooms, he said.

The handloom sector is a labour intensive cottage industry, which rolls out woven Pashmina shawls, Raffle Kani Shawls, silk saris, Kishtwari blankets, bed-sheets, curtains, cushions and various other items.

The minister said two chemical mineral testing laboratories have been set up one each in Jammu and Ompora Budgam.

The government is contemplating to set up industrial estate in each constituency to give a fillip to the industrial activities in the state, he said on Sunday adding that the registration for new industrial units will be done within a week.

Slathia said that plots will be provided quickly to entrepreneurs in the industrial estates through single window system of which director of industries would be the chairman in each division.

The government has also earmarked Rs2.64 crore to modernise government silk factory at Rajbagh. The Bemina woollen mill will also be revived fully, he added.

The minister also said that a unit of JK Cements will come up in Samba at a cost of Rs20 crore in order to help meet the local cement, besides opening up employment avenues for the youth.

Talking about Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS) he said that 606 employees of various Industrial Corporations have availed VRS and Rs16 crore has been earmarked for 204 employees this year.
