Given the vast knowledge of spirituality available in the country, India should lead the way in consciousness research and its scientists should achieve landmark advances in this field, Rajya Sabha member Karan Singh said today.

Inaugurating an international conference on 'Science and Spirituality' here, Singh said the field of science has expanded and become more flexible in recent times, leading towards a greater convergence with spirituality.

The chairman of Indian Council for Cultural Relations said being the centre of spiritual knowledge, India should be at the forefront of consciousness research.

"Even with its vast knowledge of spirituality, if India can't lead the way in consciousness research, it is a matter of great shame.... I would like to see our young scientists to win the Nobel Prize in this field," he said.

Consciousness research revolves around the evolution in mankind to the higher states of consciousness, and the resultant extraordinary geniuses like intuition, psychic gifts, and other mind-related aspects.

"In our lifetime, a view of participatory universe has started emerging, the references to which are available in scriptures. The convergence of Science and spirituality is the most dramatic in consciousness research," he said.

He recalled setting up of a 'Project Consciousness' at NIMHANS as a health minister 40 years back with a number of philosophers involved in it.

"I believe if it had continued we would have been at the forefront of consciousness research today," he said.

The two-day international conference organised by the Sai International Centre for Human Values on 'Science and Spirituality: The Growing Interface' opened today.

During the two day deliberations, 35 papers are likely to be presented by scientists, psychiatrists, spiritual leaders, educationists and philosophers, from all around the world.
