India and Nepal today discussed bilateral security cooperation as they launched their two-day talks here with focus on issues pertaining to military training, non-lethal logistic supply and information sharing.

Joint secretary in external affairs ministry Satish Mehta led a 10-member Indian delegation during the security talks with his Nepalese counterpart Khaganath Adhikari.

Ahead of the launch of the two-day meeting here, foreign ministry spokesman Rudra Nepal said that issues relating to military training, non-lethal logistic supply and information sharing will mainly figure during the joint secretary-level bilateral discussions.

Apart from discussing security cooperation between the two countries, the meeting would review progress of the high-level commitments made between their governments during prime minister Madhav Kumar Nepal's visit to India in August, officials said.

The bilateral  security talks follow the meeting of the home secretaries in Kathmandu last month.

India is likely to extend cooperation to Nepal to strengthen its security mechanism and provide training to enhance capability of the Nepalese Army, according to officials. During the meeting, Nepal is expected to seek India's help in construction of an air strip in the remote Surkhet district of Nepal, an issue which was also discussed during defence minister Vidya Bhandari's India visit.

Officials from the ministries of defence, home and foreign affairs as well as top security officials are participating in the talks.

The meeting coincided with the arrival of a Tibetan military delegation led by Lt Gen Shu Yutai here for talks with Nepal on security matters. The military team is expected to meet deputy prime minister and foreign minister Sujata Koirala, defence minister Bhandari and other officials.
