Two persons were killed in police firing in Baramulla town of north Kashmir which witnessed a massive demonstration following a claim by a woman that she had been allegedly harassed by police, prompting authorities to clamp indefinite curfew.

A magisterial probe has been ordered into the killing and circumstances leading to the violence.

Mohammad Saleem Wani, 20, a marketing executive with a private telecom company, and Tariq Ahmad Malik were killed as police opened fire after teargas shelling and baton charge failed to disperse violent protesters who took to streets demanding action against police officials involved in the alleged harassment in Baramulla, 55 km from here.

Police said a woman, whose husband was allegedly involved in kidnapping of a minor girl and had been arrested, approached the police station in Baramulla and demanded that her man should be released immediately.

However, after her demands were not fulfilled, she started shouting outside the police station that police had been demanding money from her to release her husband.

Later, she approached a local TV channel and made allegations that the police personnel had demanded money to release her husband. However, she later changed her stand and claimed that she had been sexually abused by the policemen inside the police station.

Police confiscated both the CDs from the local channel and handed them over to the inquiry commission besides recovering the kidnapped girl child at the instance of the husband of the woman.

The police officials of the district did not anticipate any trouble this morning but were surprised to see dozens of people pelting stones at the police station and demanding action against those who had allegedly misbehaved with her.

The clash also left SHO Mohammad Abdullah injured.

Two others Amir Rashid and Javid Ahmad received bullet injuries and were said to be in critical condition. They were undergoing treatment at Soura Medical Institute.

"We have also ordered a probe to investigate the firing and the allegations of the woman," Deputy Commissioner Baramulla Latif-u-Zaman Deva said. The probe would be conducted by the Additional Deputy Commissioner who will submit the report within 10 days.

"Curfew has been imposed in the town to maintain law and order," he said, adding "we are monitoring the situation which is very tense."
