In two consecutive raids near Mirzapur mutton market, police seized 2,400 kg beef on Monday morning. In the first raid at 6:30 am, police raided an open space near the market and caught one Mohammad Younus Qureshi with 1,000 kg beef.

Acting on a tip-off, striking squad of Zone I searched a place near mutton market at 6 am and recovered 1,000 kg beef from Qureshi.

At that time, they were informed about a Tata Sumo carrying beef and trying to enter Mirzapur. Based on this information, Shahpur police kept a watch near Torrent power crossroads at Mirzapur and intercepted the Sumo carrying 1,400 kg beef. However, the two accused, including the driver, fled the spot on seeing the police.

Primary investigation has revealed that the beef was coming from Godhra.

According to MM Vasava, senior police inspector of Shahpur police station, this is the third incident of illegal beef seized in Mirzapur in the past one week. "If you add the last week's incident, we have seized 7,400 kg of beef within five days," said Vasava.

On January 12, Shahpur police had seized a mini truck near Mirzapur crossroads carrying 5,000 kg beef and arrested driver Mohammad Sadiq Belim, a resident of Behrampura. During search, police also laid their hands on sharp weapons used for cutting beef inside the Eicher truck. Preliminary investigations revealed that the truck was sent by a Bharuch-based beef trader Salim and was heading towards Mirzapur mutton market. "We have booked Belim under PASA and sent him to Bharuch jail," said Vasava.
