Shiv Murti Dwivedi, the self-styled godman arrested by Delhi Police on Friday, had spread the tentacles of his high-profile sex racket in Uttar Pradesh (UP), too.

Teams of Delhi Police have swooped down on Kanpur and Chitrakoot to probe Dwivedi’s local contacts. Initial investigations have startled the top brass of UP Police, as it emerges that many top politicians, including some from the ruling BSP, and bureaucrats have links with the impostor baba.

Shiv Murti Dwivedi alias Ram Murat Dwivedi alias Rajiv Ranjan Dwivedi called himself Ichchadhari Sant Swami Bhimanand Ji Maharaj ‘Chitrakoot waale’ and claimed to be a disciple of Sai Baba. No UP Police official was willing to be quoted as several top guns are likely to be involved. For the record, the officials told DNA they could not comment as Delhi Police were handling the matter.

The baba, who hails from Chitrakoot in southern UP, left his native Chamrauha village under Manikpur police circle in 1988. He went to Delhi and worked there as a security guard for several years. A senior police officer said many MPs, MLAs and even the then district magistrate had attended a virat bhandara he had organised in Chitrakoot in October 2009. Dwivedi also had strong links with slain dasyu samrat (dacoit king) Shiv Kumar Patel alias Dadua, the official said.

Sources said Dwivedi was running a den from an apartment in Kanpur, too, with the help of a woman who is absconding after the sex racket was busted. However, a Delhi Police team found the apartment locked on Saturday morning. Neighbours told them about a dozen girls had been living in the apartment.

“Some foreign girls were also part of this racket in Kanpur… all these girls always wore saffron clothes to avoid suspicion that they were actually being used as sex workers,” a police source said.

The baba is also learnt to have forged close contacts with some private coaching institutes and hostels in Kanpur. “He used to deliver lectures on how spirituality could alleviate stress and help them do better in studies… he also lured girl students to his apartment,” he said.
