The Income Tax department that launched a massive search and seizure operation on some well-known realtors on Wednesday, will now have to do without the man who spearheaded the drive. The officer has been transferred, raising eyebrows over the sudden move.

Anand Mohan, additional director of Income Tax (I-T) investigation, has been transferred all of a sudden. According to highly placed sources, the transfer order came from the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) in New Delhi, precisely five hours after the search operation was launched. Mohan, serving in this post for last four years, was in charge of the current search operations.

Mohan's colleagues say a couple of months back some officers were transferred after they served their mandatory two years stint in the investigation department. But Mohan was not transferred and at that time it was said that there were dearth of good and experienced officers in the department. If Mohan's transfer is to respect the norms that he had already served in the post for four years, then the development could be justified.

Mohan, an IRS officer of 1993 batch, has contributed a lot as far as search and seizure operations in Gujarat are concerned. Highly placed sources said that in the search operations conducted by Mohan, some all-time high amount of tax evasions in crores were unearthed.

"If you look at the result of search and seizure operations of last one year and compare it with that of previous years, the amount of undisclosed tax is in crores. Earlier they were always in lakhs. Also the number of operations has increased," said a highly placed source.

"Our job is transferable and there is no doubt about it but such incidents demoralise us a lot. Already there is a huge pressure on us before starting any operations and if you get such kind of treatment, it discourages us to take any step," said source.

When asked weather there was any pressure on them during the search operation being conducted on city realtors such as Saumya Constructions and Radhe Developers, sources didn't deny it. "There are some influential people getting affected,'' they said.
