The dream of many Amdavadis to have a candlelit dinner on the Sabarmati was all but over. However, Crown Hotel has finally come to the rescue as no other private players came forward to submit the bid.

Despite being one of the most ambitious projects of the state government and the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Project failed to attract the attention of private players. A senior official of the SRFDCL told DNA that they had received one bid for the floating restaurant. "We look forward to having floating restaurants at two places — near Sardar and Nehru bridges. But as the concept of floating restaurants is new to Gujarat, we look at studying the proposals given to us by bidders. We have received a bid from Hotel Crown and will look at what they have to say on Tuesday," he said.

Earlier, the bidders had demanded the assurance of water flow in Sabarmati throughout the year and withdrew their bids when they could not be assured of the same. Now, the civic body has added a clause in the new tender that it would maintain water flow in the Sabarmati for at least 10 months in a year.

To reach these floating restaurants, free ferry service will be provided by the restaurants to get the people to the floating restaurants.

The civic body also received bids for boating in the Sabarmati river from two private agencies on Monday. The AMC, which wanted to start boating in the Sabarmati during this year's summer vacation, now hopes that it would be able to start both boating and floating restaurants very soon.
