The state government has shown readiness to provide free medical treatment to the 23 thalassemic kids who were infected with HIV allegedly during blood transfusion at Junagadh Civil Hospital.

The government filed an affidavit before Gujarat high court, informing it that they will provide free medical treatment to the kids, if needed. It also furnished the list of four government hospitals where the infected kids could be provided treatment.

Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, GG Hospital at Jamnagar, PDU Hospital at Rajkot and Junagadh Civil Hospital are the four hospitals.

The high court was hearing an application seeking proper medical facilities to the kids. The   application was moved during the hearing of a PIL, in which petitioner and lawyer Girish Das had sought compensation for the kids from the government.

After taking government’s stand on record, the high court bench deferred the matter for February 9 by saying that the government had taken a fair decision and the parents of the affected kids might approach these hospitals for treatment.

Das had submitted that the kids had to suffer major ailments due to the tough winter prevailing in the region this time. The condition of the thalassemic kids had worsened as HIV had lowered their immunity. The state should, therefore, provide them proper medical facilities.

The incident took place last year when 23 thalassemic children came to know that they had been infected with HIV. The kids were among the 100 children from Junagadh district, who used to come regularly to the hospital for blood transfusion.

Two of these 23 infected kids died recently.
