Himachal Pradesh govt to spend over Rs100 crore over judicial infrastructure

The Himachal Pradesh government today said it will spend over Rs100 crore during the current financial year over building  the judicial infrastructure in the state.

Making the announcement at the Ruby jubilee celebration of Himachal high court, chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal said Rs106.25 crore would be spent for expansion and strengthening of judicial infrastructure during the current financial year.

He said the state government had released revised pay scales to both the upper and lower judiciary staff after accepting the recommendations of the Shetty Commission and Justice Padamanabhan Committee.

Appreciating the initiative of Himachal high court justice Joseph Kurian to set up a 'Green Bench', Dhumal said it would give a boost to the ongoing efforts of the state government on the environment front.

Describing global warming and climate change as a potent threat to environment, Dhumal said unpredictable weather conditions, melting of glaciers and drying up of perennial natural water sources had set the alarm bells ringing and it was time to act fast.

Chief justice Kurian Joseph said that some reforms had been brought about in the functioning of high court and three interactive discussions had already been organised while more such interactive sessions were on the cards.

He said that a 'Green Bench' had been set up in the high court for expeditous disposal of environment related cases of which 13,752 had been disposed off in a record time of 65 days after the courts resumed after the vacations.

A host of past and present HC judges, legal luminaries, advocates and prominent citizens converged at Peterhoof to be honoured at the 'Samman Samaroh' which was organised to mark the occasion.

A large number of judges including former chief justice of Himachal high court justice NM Kasliwal, justice CK Thakker, justice Leila Seth and former Supreme Court judge, justice LS Panta and former judges justice TR Handa, VP Bhatnagar, DP Sood, RK Mahajan, PK Palli, Surinder Swarup, RL Khurana, AK Goel, KC Sood, and VK Jhanji got the honours at the function.
