Heavy rains throw life out of gear in Chhattisgarh

Flash floods caused by heavy torrential rains in Naxal-hit Bastar district of Chhattisgarh has hit over 9,000 people in the region rendering scores of them homeless, official sources said today.

About 91 marooned persons were airlifted and rescued by helicopters and motorboats in Nadibodna area and shifted to relief camps in Nagarnar, after continuous downpour since last three days in Bastar and nearby areas.

Flooding in several villages threw life out of gear and many highways in Bastar region have been cut off due to rains, they said.

Rescue teams comprising local divers, home guard jawans and police personnel have been deployed in the area for immediate relief operations, food supply and medical aid to affected people, sources said.

Indravati and other adjoining rivers in the district were flowing close to their warning levels while several other tributaries were filling up fast due to continuous showers.

The overflowing Narangi river in Bastar caused flash floods in Palabahar, Badeamabal, Kohkasiwani, several villages like Tarapur, Baniyagaoan, Belgaon, Ulnar, Kohkapal, Malgaon, Talnar in Bakawand division besides Takarguda, Badanji, Kumhali, Benidharaur, Chandela and Kakner villages in Lohandiguda division.

In Jagdalpur, many areas like Dhanpunji, Nagarnar, Bhejapadar, Nadibodna, Upanpal, Dhongaghat were affected as rains lashed the rivers up north.

Bastar collector MM Paraste said tloods and heavy rains have affected 9,000 people in these areas while one person was killed in Kondagaon, when he was washed away due to heavy currents.

Several livestock deaths were reported from these areas. Also round the clock flood alert groups have been set in district headquarters and tehsils to keep a check on the situation, Paraste said.
