ShareNew Delhi: Life came to a standstill in many parts of the national capital today due to record overnight rains which led to heavy water logging in several areas resulting in chaotic traffic jams.
Traffic in various parts of the city was crawling with several busy intersections and roads still inundated by the first widespread monsoon rains in the city.
With meteorological department predicting more spells of rains today, the situation is unlikely to improve.
"There will be more spells of rain today," a Met department official said. He said the city received 126 mm of rains till 8:30 this morning.
Heavy traffic snarls were reported in various places including Chirag Dilli, Dwaraka sector 6,7 and 22, Moolchand, Bijwasan, Andheri Maur, Bhajanpura, Sultanpuri, Lado Sarai, Ashram, Lajpat Nagar, Sarita Vihar and Maharani Bagh.
Traffic was moving at a snail's pace at ITO, Nizamuddin and Pragati Maidan delaying office-goers in the morning rush hour.
Traffic is running slow at Seelampur, Apsara border, Jehangirpuri, Connaught Place, Dilli Cant, Greater Kailash, Shadipur and on Mehrauli Badarpur road.
Commuters coming from Dwarka had a harrowing time this morning as all routes leading to the main city were choked.
"I have been on the roads for almost two hours and do not know when I will reach my destination," Rakesh, a software professional, who was stuck on a Dwarka road, said.
Abhijeet, who had to catch a flight to Mumbai at noon, said he was not sure if he would be able to reach the airport in time due to the chaotic traffic condition in South Delhi.
Water logging was also reported in many underpasses including the Moolchand underpass.
Potholes added to the woes of motorists with hundreds of them surfacing on major roads.
"It took me almost three hours to reach ITO from Khanpur which usually takes me one hour on a normal day," said Deba, a software professional.
The minimum temparature was recorded at 23.6 degree Celsius this morning.
