Gujarat continued to reel under the continuing heat wave as its impact was felt by the common man and the city life. People preferred to stay back at home rather than venture out. The shopkeepers also had a chance to take a decent nap as hardly anyone turned up for shopping between 12 noon and 6pm. "This time the heat wave has taken its toll on the businesses as well.

The businessmen, even on the busy street of Gurukul road, are seen sitting idle as no customer turn up till six in the evening," said Siddharth Mehta, a businessman.

Many businessmen took a full day's break on Sunday, which is usually not the case. "We have observed in the past week or so that the number of customers coming to the city has decreased. This is why I decided to take a total break this Sunday," said Shailesh Pandya, a readymade garment merchant in Gheekanta area.

Not only business, but also social functions have been affected by the heat wave prevailing in the state for over a week now. The guest turnout at marriages has remained lower because of mercury melting. It should be noted that a groom also fell prey to the hot weather on Saturday. Many dance lovers have avoided dancing to the tune of their favourite film songs during marriage processions in the city.

Prakash Dave, a resident of Nirnaynagar, said that earlier all eight members of their family were to attend  the marriage of his niece at Shamlaji. "Taking into account the unprecedented heat wave, we decided not to take along the children along as they could be tremendously affected," said Dave.

The doctors have advised everyone to take light food and consume more liquid to save themselves from sun strokes. "Heavy food items lead to gastroenteritis problems because of higher temperature, so one should try and avoid it," said Dr Bhavin Joshi, deputy health officer of East Zone of AMC, who added that lack of perspiration could be the primary symptom of sun stroke.
