The record rise in temperature in the last three days has got Amdavadis literally dropping unconscious. Calls for hearse have almost doubled in the last two days while hospitals are witnessing a record rise in heat stroke patients.

Meanwhile, the 108 emergency service has deployed additional ambulances to cater to victims of the heat. The Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services (AFES), which supply the hearse, has seen a 100% increase in demand of the vehicle in the last two days. A source in AFES told DNA that the rise in demand for hearse is surely due to heat stroke incidents. On an average AFES gets around 60 to 70 calls per day for hearse, but the number touched 134 till late afternoon on Saturday.

"The numbers of calls indicate that the number of deaths have registered a rise in the city." an official of AFES told DNA.

Meanwhile, as more Amdavadis fall victim to the heat stroke in the last two days, the 108 ambulance service has been forced to increase the number of ambulances from 28 to 32.

A source in the Emergency Management and Research Institute (EMRI), told DNA that the maximum calls were from the eastern part and old city areas of Ahmedabad.

The source said that most of the victims who fainted were suffering from heat stroke, vomiting and gastro problems — all related to the rise in temperature. “The patients were moved to private as well as government hospitals and were provided emergency treatment," the source said.

EMRI received at least 250 calls of which 150 calls were related to heat stroke till late afternoon on Saturday.

Most of the people, who were shifted to the hospitals, were picked up by EMRI from either the city roads or marriage venues.
