Shabbir alias Zakir Hussain Momin, the man who allegedly sold spurious liquor to the victims, is not a bootlegger. A source said that he had sold off the substance (methyl alcohol mixed with water) to the victims after purchasing it from someone else. The source also said that Shabbir was an alcoholic himself and had got the liquor for himself.

A source in the Ahmedabad city crime branch, which is investigating the matter, said, “He had bought a potli for Rs50, but after consuming a little, he had sold the rest of it off; he is not a bootlegger. The essence required to make household incense was also found in the liquor.”

Police interrogation has revealed that the actual culprit is not Shabbir but someone else.

Shabbir will be grilled by the Ahmedabad city crime branch sleuths again once he recovers completely. He is presently at the VS hospital, where he got admitted after consuming the liquor, which was allegedly spurious. Sources in the crime branch however told DNA that the statements of Shabbir will be recorded in totality once he recovers.

The sources also said that Shabbir’s statements will help get the investigating agency more leads into the offence. Crime branch sleuths said that once Shabbir recovers, his statement will be considered more ‘legally sound’. A senior crime branch official said, “Right now, it is not viable to record Shabbir’s statements. We will take at least 3 days to record his statements and are waiting for his health to improve so that his statements stand valid.”

According to the police, Shabbir had mixed methyl alcohol with water and had sold it to a few people near Victoria garden. Shabbir was arrested from near Palanpur in connection with the supply of the alleged spurious liquor. Shabbir was released a month back from jail. He was in judicial custody for allegedly causing the death of a man.

The source said that Shibbir will not booked under the charges of prohibition. “In this case, the liquor supplied was methyl alcohol mixed with water, which is not hooch, so the accused will not be booked under the charges of prohibition. He will, however, be charged for supplying a poisonous substance to people and thereby causing the death of many.”

Officials, however, are holding Shabbir responsible for the deaths since he was the one who supplied the liquor.
