The first phase of the state's census, the household census-2011 which ends on June 4, 2010 will throw up some interesting and surprising data. Though the findings will be available only after 1.5 to two years, the primary data of the state's census is likely to produce some fascinating trends especially with regard to the state's rapid urbanisation.

Highly placed officials in the Directorate of Census Operations, Gujarat said, "The most exciting trend that has emerged during the ongoing census is the possible rate of urbanisation in the state.

The urbanisation ratio in the 2001 census was 37.36% which is likely to reach 50% or very close to it in the 2011 census. Since 1961, the rate of urbanisation in the state has been steadily increasing. But, in 2011, it is expected to rise over 10% for the first time in a decade. Seven major municipal corporations, municipalities and a number of new urban pockets have witnessed huge rural to urban migration. Migration from other states in the service industry has also increased.''

India's urbanisation rate in 2001 was 27.78%. According to the 2001 census Ahmedabad (80.18%), Surat (59.97%), Rajkot (51.29%), Vadodara (45.20%) districts had the highest rate of urbanisation, which is likely to increase considerably in 2011.

Sources further said, "The census-2011 will also show some interesting demographic trends like the stabilisation of the sex ratio due to various government efforts which otherwise had been skewed since 1981. Literacy rate which was 69.1% in 2001 is also likely to go up considerably. Decadal growth of 10% has been observed since last few decades."

The state's population will also see a remarkable jump to 59020000 from 50671000 in 2001.

The 2011 census survey form covers many personal details like whether a household owns television, scooter, car, computer, laptop and the use of banking services along with information about basic amenities like drinking water, drainage etc. The second phase of the census, which will be the population census, will be done in February 2011.

For the first time, forms of the National Population Register (NPR) have also been filled by the enumerators during this census, which will help in the preparation of biometric-based Unique Identity(UID) Number Cards.
