Gujarat will benefit from the new policy adopted by the NPCIL (Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd) for allocation of power to home states. With two new power plants at Kakrapar atomic power stations scheduled to commence operations in 2015, Gujarat stands to gain larger power share than it gets now.

NPCIL has made changes in power allocation rules for states where its atomic power stations are based. According to the new policy, the state will get 50% of total power generated by these plants, if demanded.
Till now, policy has been such that the home state had to demand power from NPCIL and after reviewing the claim, allocation was decided. With introduction of the new policy, Gujarat will benefit more.

“The new power allocation policy for home states has been framed and an official notification for the same will be issued soon.

At present, the new policy will be for new atomic power plants, while power allocation policy for existing power plants will be the same,” G Nageshwara Rao, project director of NPCIL, said.

Rao added that the Gujarat government will be informed about the new policy, once the official gazette is issued. After inquiry into Gujarat’s requirements, attempts will be made for it to get 50% of the same.

Gujarat at present gets 38% power of its current power generation from Kakrapar I and II. Total power generation of both units is 440 MW. NPCIL is constructing two new atomic power plants - Kakrapar III and IV, which are expected to commence in 2015. The total power generation capacity of both these plants is 1400 MW.

“With the new policy, Gujarat will get 700 MW of power generated in these plants. The new policy will be implemented once both new plants start generation. This will definitely boost Gujarat’s development and remove power deficiency, if any,” Lokesh Kumar, project director of Kakrapar III and IV, said.

According to Kumar, the new policy has been framed so that the home state gets maximum benefit of atomic power plants.
