Gujarat, which is said to have missed the IT bus, is now once again trying to lure the industry by announcing attractive IT policy.

Gujarat government's IT policy, which was made for five years, was announced in 2006 and will get over in 2011. Under the new policy, it is now likely to offer tax benefits to the industry which is expected to be announced any time in 2012.

The state government has also asked for suggestions from various industry associations for formation of the new IT policy. "We have asked CII, FICCI, GCCI, Gesia, Fitag, Acma and other industry bodies to advise state government for new IT policy. The present policy is getting over in this year itself," said Ravi Saxena, ACS, Department of Science & Technology, Gujarat government, on the sidelines of announcement of ICT event in Gandhinagar next week.

Talking about new IT policy, Saxena said that it will be broad based. "Not just IT or ITeS, but electronics will also be covered under new policy. Simultaneously, we are considering to make the policy such away that the IT companies will be attracted to Gujarat," said Saxena and added that state government is also considering to offer tax benefits for IT companies under new policy.

At present, Centre's tax benefits to IT industry are over. "Under STPI, the IT companies used to get tax exemptions, which are over while under SEZs, the MAT is imposed. Hence, now the IT companies are no more interested in going to ITSEZs. Looking at all the aspects, we are making the IT policy, which will accordingly benefit the IT, ITeS and electronics industry," said Saxena.

The department of science and technology, Gujarat government in collaboration with Elets Technomedia Pvt Ltd, is organising the seventh edition of eIndia, India's largest ICT conference, next week in Gandhinagar.

The event is being co-organised by department of information technology, ministry of communications & IT, government of India. "The conference would have three major tracks focusing on e-governance, digital learning and eHealth under which, there would be multiple thematic sessions," said programme convenor and CEO of Elets Technomedia, Ravi Gupta.
