To raise the standard of its post graduation courses, Gujarat Technological University (GTU) is planning to adopt a system of undertaking midterm review of masters degree dissertations-a practice followed in premiere institutes like Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).

At the end of the current academic year, the technological university will do away with the existing system of reviewing dissertations at the end of the year. From the next session, it will introduce a system where there will be a midterm reviews of masters theses in engineering and pharmacy. Not only that, the reviews will be carried out by external experts, rather than internal guides of students.

According to Dr Akshai Aggarwal, vice-chancellor of GTU, the midterm reviews of dissertations will greatly lift their quality. This will put these students at par with their counterparts in premiere institutes.

The vice-chancellor said that dissertation works should be taken seriously, both by students as well as by the university. "IITs already follow this system. Now it's our turn to implement it," said Dr Aggarwal.

To suggest constructive changes in such theses, GTU has decided to call professors of premiere institutes of the country for the reviews. "We have roped in faculty members from
IIT Kharagpur, IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi to conduct
the midterm reviews.

Their suggestions can make a huge difference to the dissertations of ME and MPharm students," Dr Aggarwal further said.

Presently, the project works of masters students are reviewed at the time of their final submission only. Since they complete their work before the submission, students do not get opportunity to incorporate major changes suggested by experts at the time of the one and final review.

"The midterm reviews will be done during the months of April and May, well before the final submission in June-July. At the end of the midterm reviews, each student will be given a copy of review comments, based on which they will give final shape to their work," said Dr. Aggarwal.

At present, 390 experts of GTU examine the project works of more than 700 students of ME and MPharm every year.

The technological university had sought opinion of many senior professors and industry experts before arriving at this decision. The experts included Dr. TK Nanadi of IIT Kharagpur, Dr. AR Abhyankar of IIT Delhi among others.
